Saint Lucy was born of a rich and noble family in the year 283 in Syracuse, Sicily. Her father died when she was young and her mother, Eutychia, who suffered from a painful illness, arranged a marriage for her. Growing up a Christian, Lucy vowed her life to God. To change her mother's mind about the marriage, Lucy prayed at the tomb of Saint Agatha, and her mother's illness was cured. Her mother agreed with Lucy's desire to live for God and allowed her to renounce the engagement.

The rejected bridegroom denounced Lucy as a Christian and had the governor order her death. The governor had her tortured by gouging her eyes out, but God restored her eyesight. The governor then ordered her to be set on fire. Again, God interceded and she was saved. Lucy was later martyred with a dagger.

Saint Lucy is recognized today as the patroness of those who suffer from blindness and eye ailments.

Her feast day is December 13th.
